On May 19, 2023, the Research Center for Carbon Dioxide Resource Utilization (hereinafter referred to as “the Research Center”) under the Research Department of Carbon Capture and Utilization of Tianfu Yongxing Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as “the Laboratory”) successfully held a demonstration conference on the construction scheme. The attendees from the expert panel of this conference included Wang Qi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Leader of the expert panel for this demonstration conference; Kang Hongpu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Zhang Liehui, President of Southwest Petroleum University; Cheng Fangqin, Deputy President of Shanxi University; Guo Tonglou, Executive Chairman of Sinopec Southwest China Petroleum Bureau; Chen Shuoyi, Director of former Energy Department of High-tech Center for the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China; Huang Yan, Deputy General Manager of Guoneng Jinjie Energy Co., Ltd.; Wang Tao, a professor of Zhejiang University; Yin Xiwen, Branch Director of CCTEG Coal Mining Research Institute; Zhuang Yuanfa, Minister of Dongfang Electric Dongfang Boiler Co., Ltd.; and Lei Ting, Minister of the Department for Science and Technology Innovation of New Hope Group.
Through a form of ‘offline + online’, this demonstration conference was presided over by Xie Heping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chief Head of the Department of Carbon Capture and Utilization. At the beginning of the conference, academician Xie Heping expressed his gratitude for all attending guests and wished that experts could share valuable opinions for the demonstration of the Center, and provide suggestions for the construction of the Research Center.
At this conference, Liang Bin, Deputy President of Sichuan University, reported the construction schemes for the Research Center based on five aspects including construction background and target orientation, research tasks and characteristic advantages, expected results and schedule arrangement, construction foundation and team conditions, as well as organizational implementation and management plans.
The Vice President Liang Bin pointed out that the resource utilization of carbon dioxide was a prominent component of CCUS technology system and even an important initiative to reach the “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” goals. Taking carbon dioxide as the object, aiming at developing the technology of carbon dioxide resource utilization with low energy consumption, large-scale, and high value, and adopting carbon dioxide mineralization as the dominant feature, the Research Center explores the new principles and technology of carbon dioxide conversion and utilization from three levels at the technical principle research, reaction enhancement and control, and development and expanding tests and verification of key equipment, which are committed to realizing low energy consumption, large-scale, high value, and zero emissions in the carbon dioxide utilization process, establishing a brand new system of core technology for carbon dioxide conversion and utilization, and helping to establish an industrial innovation highland between China’s CCUS and industrial low-carbon green transformation.
After full inquiry and discussion, the expert panel all agreed to approve the demonstration of the construction scheme. The expert panel believes that the Center adheres to China’s “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” policy and targets international cutting-edge and world-class level, which pose a great significance for deeply performing theoretical research, technological innovation, talent cultivation, and industrial transformation of carbon dioxide resource utilization. It is quite necessary for the Laboratory to set up the Center for its features on explicit objective orientation, reasonable research tasks, distinctive research and application of industry and education, and strong supporting capacity of participating units, which will be conducive to achieving China’s low-carbon economic development and the “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” policy.
