In view of the evolving trajectory of global research on biomass structural materials, the Research Center for Biomass Materials has identified critical objectives in the urgently needed biomass-based structural materials and biomass-based functional materials within China. Using bamboo as the fundamental material, the center endeavors to construct bamboo fiber-based structural materials and functional materials through reorganization and composite with functional elements, which are then applied to prefabricated buildings, microwave and infrared stealth, and radiation protection. Furthermore, the center conducts relevant basic research and strives to promote achievement industrialization, with attention being paid to overcoming the technical bottlenecks regarding the directional design and large-scale production of high-strength biomass-based structural materials and biomass-based functional materials.

The core mission of the Research Center for Biomass Zero-carbon Fuels is to revolutionize energy production by utilizing discarded biomass to generate high-value-added fuels. This initiative is poised to drive a significant shift in China’s raw materials system, transitioning from reliance on fossil fuels buried beneath the earth to harnessing renewable energies available on the earth’s surface. Besides, the center plays a supportive role in building a resource carbon neutrality mode in energy, chemical industry, transportation, steel, among other industries. To conquer a technological difficulty in preparing high-value fuels with discarded biomass through engineering methods, the center aims to unblock a complete innovation chain, spanning from basic research to industrialization. Meanwhile, its researches focus on three major directions, including producing high-value fuel oils with biomass, producing hydrogen with biomass/wastes, and preparing alcohol with biomass. Ultimately, it is expected to establish a set of technology and engineering equipment for preparing high-value fuels with biomass efficiently.

Polymer materials exhibit outstanding comprehensive properties and find extensive applications across various fields of the national economy. However, their non-standardized treatment and lack of effective recycling technology result in a low recycling rate of waste polymer materials, serious environmental pollution, and great waste of resources.
In view of the world challenges faced by environmentally friendly polymers and recycling under the background of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the Research Center for Green and Low-carbon Processing and Resource Utilization of Polymer Materials promotes the green and low-carbon development of the polymer industry from the whole chain of source substitution, green and low-carbon processing, and waste recycling. The center establishes high-value utilization of biomass materials in solid phase and green and low-carbon manufacturing technologies for polymer materials, develops key technologies and equipment for green and efficient recycling of waste plastics, and helps realize the national “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” goals, providing the world’s leading Chinese solutions for global plastic pollution control.
