Carbon capture is an important technical support for realizing the “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” goals, but there is no single carbon capture method that can independently, efficiently, economically, and energy-efficiently capture carbon dioxide (CO₂). Low energy consumption, high stability, and large-scale carbon dioxide capture technologies are still blank in the world.
Attempting to meet the national carbon neutrality strategic needs, focusing on the bottlenecks and difficulties in carbon capture technology, aiming at low energy consumption, low-cost, and high-efficiency carbon capture technology, featuring carbon dioxide electrochemical carbon capture, the Research Institute for New Principles and Technology of Carbon Dioxide Capture explores new principles and technology of carbon dioxide capture from the three levels of technical principle research, capture material research and development, and expanding test equipment research. The Center aims to comprehensively build China’s independently created new carbon dioxide capture technology system, helping to build an industrial innovation highland for CCUS and Industrial low-carbon and green transformation

Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) stands as a crucial solution to the global climate problem and a foundational technology in realizing the strategic goal of carbon neutrality. However, carbon dioxide capture technology faces technical challenges such as high energy consumption and limited economic benefits, and the efficient development and utilization of captured carbon dioxide remains an international focal point and challenge. Focusing on efficient carbon dioxide capture and conversion/mineralization utilization, the institute establishes multiple highly efficient carbon dioxide conversion technology routes by continuously exploring new solutions for efficient carbon dioxide capture and resource utilization to successfully master the working mechanism and preparation technology of the core catalytic materials, produce large-scale core equipment products, and initially achieve the industrial demonstration effect. The ultimate goal is to form a China’s original carbon utilization technology system and provide China’s solutions, China’s wisdom, and China’s standards for global carbon recycling economy. The research areas include the development of new carbon dioxide absorbents, process enhancement of carbon dioxide capture and energy integration, optimal design of capture process and equipment development, carbon dioxide mineralization and utilization technology, directional conversion of carbon dioxide into high-value chemicals, and carbon dioxide hydrogen/energy storage utilization technology. The breakthroughs in the technology of carbon dioxide capture and resource utilization will play a crucial role in advancing China’s creation of low-carbon and environmentally friendly emerging strategic industries with international competitiveness as it progresses towards carbon neutrality.
