Introduction
Resource Carbon Neutrality

The core mission of the Research Center for Biomass Zero-carbon Fuels is to revolutionize energy production by utilizing discarded biomass to generate high-value-added fuels. This initiative is poised to drive a significant shift in China’s raw materials system, transitioning from reliance on fossil fuels buried beneath the earth to harnessing renewable energies available on the earth’s surface. Besides, the center plays a supportive role in building a resource carbon neutrality mode in energy, chemical industry, transportation, steel, among other industries. To conquer a technological difficulty in preparing high-value fuels with discarded biomass through engineering methods, the center aims to unblock a complete innovation chain, spanning from basic research to industrialization. Meanwhile, its researches focus on three major directions, including producing high-value fuel oils with biomass, producing hydrogen with biomass/wastes, and preparing alcohol with biomass. Ultimately, it is expected to establish a set of technology and engineering equipment for preparing high-value fuels with biomass efficiently.

Under the guidance of Professor Jiang Xia of Sichuan University, the research team owns 7 relevant national, provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms such as the Ministry of Education’s Platform of Integrated Research on Resource Carbon Neutrality Key Technologies, and the National Flue Gas Desulfurization Engineering Technology Research Center. The team has leveraged its complementary advantages and focused on research initiatives. It has assembled a high-level R&D team comprising experts from universities, scientific research institutes, and enterprises. The team boasts a balanced composition in terms of professional background, title, and age, equipped with extensive experience in managing major domestic projects related to biomass fuels, ensuring both personnel and technical support essential for the establishment and growth of research centers.

    Preparation of high value fuel from biomass

    The center is dedicated to spearheading the scientific and technological revolution of replace fossil resources with biomass fuels. It focuses on studying the cutting-edge technology of biomass “carbon-oxygen-oxygen” renewable raw material system, aiming to supplant the traditional “carbon-hydrogen” fossil raw material system. This initiative involves overcoming engineering technology bottlenecks for the preparation of biofuels such as gasoline, diesel, and aviation oil from lees, straw, and waste oil, further developing a comprehensive set of core technologies and engineering equipment for the efficient production of these biofuels from bulk waste biomass.

    Hydrogen production from biomass/waste

    Given the challenges of high energy consumption, low yield, and complex purification in hydrogen production from biomass/waste, the center focuses on developing key technologies of low-energy consumption biomass/waste pyrolysis and gasification for hydrogen production, along with high-efficiency syngas micro-interface oscillation enhanced purification. Additionally, the center is working on technologies of water vapor conversion for hydrogen production and ultra-clean purification. The goal is to establish a comprehensive set of core technologies and engineering equipment capable of producing battery-grade hydrogen from biomass/waste.

    Ethanol production from biomass

    To address the challenges of low conversion efficiency and insufficient production performance, the center is focusing on breakthroughs in joint pretreatment technology for raw materials. This approach involves regulating metabolic pathways and strengthening the production process to enhance conversion rates. Additionally, the center is working on improving strains for ethanol production, so as to establish a comprehensive set of efficient ethanol fermentation technology.
