RESEARCH FIELD
In view of the evolving trajectory of global research on biomass structural materials, the Research Center for Biomass Materials has identified critical objectives in the urgently needed biomass-based structural materials and biomass-based functional materials within China. Using bamboo as the fundamental material, the center endeavors to construct bamboo fiber-based structural materials and functional materials through reorganization and composite with functional elements, which are then applied to prefabricated buildings, microwave and infrared stealth, and radiation protection. Furthermore, the center conducts relevant basic research and strives to promote achievement industrialization, with attention being paid to overcoming the technical bottlenecks regarding the directional design and large-scale production of high-strength biomass-based structural materials and biomass-based functional materials.
Led by Professor Shi Bi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the center boasts a research and development team with innovative vitality, research strength, and reasonable structures. These researchers are composed of national-famous teachers, Young and Middle-Aged Leading Talents in Technological Innovation of the Ministry of Science and Technology, winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, winners of the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, talents included in the Ministry of Education’s Program for New Century Excellent Talents, Academic and Technical Leaders in Sichuan Province, young talents of Sichuan Province’s “Tianfu Talent Plan”, winners of the Outstanding Youth Fund of Sichuan Province, and talents included in the “Young Elite Scientists Sponsorship Program” by CAST.
To address the hurdles associated with replacing bulk materials through large-scale manufacturing of biomass materials, the greening of manufacturing processes and products, and the empowerment of special functions, the center is poised to delve into several key areas. These include the green manufacturing technology of high-strength, high-tenacity, and high-stability biomass structural materials, the green manufacturing technology of functional and multi-purpose biomass structural materials, and the recycling technology of biomass materials. Specifically, the main research directions of the center are as follows:
1
With bamboo as the raw material, the center is committed to exploring directional splitting and combing, surface structure regulation and chemical modification, the mechanisms and methods of composite enhancement and toughening for bamboo, and studying key technologies including solvent-free bonding, bionic evolution, and mechanical molding. On this basis, it aims to produce biomass-based structural materials that can extensively replace carbon steel, aluminum, plastics, cement, and high-value wood, furthering creating a complete set of key technologies and equipment for the manufacturing and large-scale application of high-performance bamboo fiber-based biomass structural materials.
2
Taking into account the demands of the nuclear industry, nuclear medical, and other industries for structural materials with radiation shielding functions, the center utilizes bamboo fiber as the basic material and devotes efforts to the composite technology of high-Z elements and bamboo fiber, the composite technology of high-absorption cross-section elements and bamboo fiber, and the efficient dispersion technology of functional elements. Eventually, it is able to develop lightweight X and γ ray shielding and lightweight neutron moderation and absorption structural materials based on bamboo fiber, and establish technologies and equipment for large-scale production and application.
3
Leveraging bamboo fiber as the basic material, the center strives to study the high-efficiency absorption technology of full-band microwave, the preparation technology of microwave and infrared dual-stealth materials, and the large-scale production of bamboo fiber-based materials. These endeavors align with the development trend of global biomass material research and China’s urgently needed biomass-based microwave and infrared stealth materials in green buildings, national defense, and other fields. The goal is to produce the key technologies and equipment for the production and large-scale application of bamboo fiber-based high-performance microwave and infrared stealth structural materials.
