Introduction
Clean and Low-carbon Energy

In pursuit of the “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” goals, a major expenditure of effort should be devoted to energy, and electricity should be utilized as the main force. Clean energy, anchored by hydropower, wind power, photovoltaic power, and storage, will become the dominant power supply for the future energy system. Targeting optimized capacity configuration, thorough safety perception and ecological protection, and intelligent regulation and efficient utilization of multi-energy complementation, the Research Center for Smart Energy of Hydro-Wind-Solar Energy Storage conducts research and development of mechanism technologies, material equipment, and software systems from the three aspects of planning and configuration, safety and ecology, and regulation and utilization. The center has devised a solution to Sichuan for smart energy of hydro-wind-solar energy storage through combining Sichuan’s water-based resource feature and employing application of digitization and intelligence in energy systems. Its overarching goal is to build itself into an innovation source, industrial cluster, and application demonstration site for the high-quality development of smart energy of hydro-wind-solar energy storage.

Under the leadership of Professor Chen Yongcan, the research team is backed by Sichuan University, Southwest Petroleum University, Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute of Tsinghua University, and other research institutions and large basin hydropower groups, forming a ‘wild goose mode’ interdisciplinary talent team. The research field of researchers involves “industry-academia-research-application” collaborative innovation covering basic research, planning and design, system integration, and application demonstration. The researchers come from diverse backgrounds, spanning disciplines such as water conservancy and hydropower engineering, electrical engineering, control science and engineering, and materials engineering, and are experienced in undertaking major projects in the field of smart energy of hydro-wind-solar energy storage.

Research directions

From the three aspects of planning and configuration, safety and ecology, and regulation and utilization of the smart energy base of hydro-wind-solar energy storage, the center conducts research and development of software systems, key materials, and equipment, which fall into the following contents:

    Optimized configuration of hydro-wind-solar energy storage capacity while considering the power supply tenacity

    Given the unpredictability of Sichuan's power supply and its vulnerability to weather conditions, and based on the two scenarios of the current hydropower installed capacity and the target year of planning, the center makes full use of the complementary characteristics of resources, rationally optimizes the configuration of hydro-wind-solar energy storage capacity, and improves the utilization rate of hydropower, wind power, and solar energy resources and the resilience of power supply in extreme scenarios. In this way, the operation of the power grid could be safer, more stable, more flexible, and more efficient.

    Thorough safety perception and ecological protection

    To tackle technical challenges related to energy facility safety and ecological environment operation and management, the center develops thorough perception technology and complete sets of equipment for clean energy structure facilities, establishes chain disasters and ecological environment monitoring-early warning-evaluation technology under joint coordination and control, and builds a basin-level digital twin platform for safety and ecological intelligent operation and management.

    Intelligent regulation and efficient utilization of multi-energy complementation

    In order to address the challenge of complementary intelligent regulation with multiple power supplies, multiple subjects, and multiple time scales, and develop key materials required for dynamic and adaptable green power conversion and utilization, the center carries out technical research as well as system research and development to improve the level of comprehensive utilization of clean energy (both local and imported).
